Is a Plasma TV right for you?
Several years ago when plasma TVs first appeared, buyers paid a premium for the thin design and had to settle for picture quality that was good but not great. Thanks to dramatic improvements in the past few years, plasma picture quality now competes in most ways with high-quality CRT-based TVs (CRTs still have the edge in reproducing deep blacks and shadow detail, as well as making motion look smooth.) But plasma and LCD technology continues to improve.
If a TV's size and weight aren't issues for you, CRT-based direct-view and rear-projection TVs still offer more bang for the buck than plasma TVs. Plasma TVs have been around a little longer than LCD TVs, and offer slightly wider viewing angles and are actually less expensive per inch of screen than LCD. If you want a screen larger than 40" that's bright enough to enjoy in a sunlit room, plasma is the way to go.
